To work with the GRCA’s various Education Committees and Sub-committees in any endeavors in which interpretation and application of the Standard may be concerned. The Breed Standard Committee shall review any text, photographs, and illustrations that pertain to application or interpretation of the Breed Standard in any materials developed by the Breed Education Committee and Sub-committees. The Breed Standard Committee shall have primary responsibility for developing an Illustrated Breed Standard; this project should also be reviewed by the Breed Education Committee. To these ends, it is strongly recommended that the Chair of the Breed Standard Committee shall be a member of the Judges’ Education Sub-committee of the Breed Education Committee.

Guidelines:

Revisions to the Standard: If and when revisions to the Standard are proposed, the Breed Standard Committee shall write them, and shall present proposals to the membership of the GRCA by means of the Golden Retriever News for general discussion. If the proposals are extensive, they should be presented in sections. All comments shall be addressed to the Breed Standard Committee. When all proposed revisions are completed by the Committee, the entire Standard shall be submitted to the American Kennel Club for a preliminary review in order to ensure that it is in compliance with AKC policy, and then to the GRCA Board of Directors for review. With preliminary approval from AKC and upon approval from the GRCA board, the proposed revised Standard will be published in the Golden Retriever News alongside the current Standard. Each proposed revision shall be numbered separately. The rationale for each proposal may be voted upon independently, in accordance with Article IX of the By-Laws. Results of voting and the revised Standard as approved will be sent to the AKC, and upon their final approval, the revised Standard will be published in the Golden Retriever News with the date that the new Standard becomes effective. The revised Standard shall be sent to all AKC approved judges of Golden Retrievers, along with a copy of the ballot with the rationale for each change.

Letters to Judges will be produced in cooperation with the Judges’ Education Sub-committee. Letters may be produced and sent as needed (probably not more often than once every two or three years) in order to address any matters deemed of sufficient concern in the judging of Golden Retrievers at that time. A Letter to the Judges will accompany each official revision of the Breed Standard when it is sent to all AKC approved judges of Golden Retrievers. The use of electronic publication (such as via GRCA and AKC websites) and the AKC Gazette and Judges’ Newsletter, as well as the Golden Retriever News, is encouraged.

Questions concerning the Standard shall be sent to and considered by the Breed Standard Committee, who shall respond privately, or if the subject is deemed of sufficient interest, may respond publicly by means of articles in the Golden Retriever News.

Articles: The committee may also produce articles from time to time on other matters of interest, especially towards clarification, interpretation, and application of the Standard, not only in the show ring but also relating to field work, performance, and breeding. In these, the Breed Standard Committee should work with the Breed Education Committee or any of its Sub-committees as needed and appropriate. Such articles shall not be subject to review by the Editorial Review Board.

Illustrated Breed Standard shall be the responsibility of the Breed Standard Committee working in cooperation with the Breed Education Committee, specifically the Judges’ Education Sub-committee, which shall have the opportunity to review and to comment upon this project as it is developed, but final decisions as to content and illustrations used are the responsibility of the Breed Standard Committee, and ultimately the Board of Directors of the GRCA. Text, other than the Standard itself, shall be copyrighted in the name of the GRCA, or permission gained from the copyright holder (as in use of extended quotes). Illustrations may be copyrighted by the artist(s) and/or photographer(s), providing that appropriate rights of reproduction are assigned to the GRCA for the uses and purposes of the Illustrated Breed Standard/Guide for Judges. Appropriate accreditation and copyright notices will appear in the finished product.

Use of the Technical Support Group: The Breed Standard Committee may make use of the Technical Support Group of the Breed Educational Committee in the same manner as do the Educational Sub-committees, or may make use of the Technology Committee. The Breed Standard Committee shall approve the format, content, and illustrations used in their projects that are published or put into use by means of the Technical Support Group or the Technology Committee.
