VetGen is sending this information to make you aware of their research on canine genetic disorders. VetGen is one of the leaders in canine genetic research, working in conjunction with the University of Michigan, to identify the disease causing genes with the end result being a direct DNA test which will indicate the clear, carrier, or affected status of the dog. Direct DNA tests are a completely reliable way to select a sire and dam which will not produce any affected dogs.
We are still researching the genetic causes of Juvenile Cataracts and Hip Dysplasia in Golden Retrievers and are in need of DNA samples from litters where two or more siblings have been diagnosed with Juvenile Cataracts (or in the case of Hip Dysplasia two or more diagnosed with Hip Dysplasia). We need DNA samples from the affected dogs, their parents, and one or two unaffected littermates as well.
DNA is collected by means of small oral brush swabs which are simply swiped in the dog's mouth. We send out the number of swab kits requested and enclose instructions, and a self-addressed, stamped envelope for their return.
PARTICIPATION IS FREE AND COMPLETELY CONFIDENTIAL.
If you can pass the word along to club members and in club newsletters it would be very helpful. If you have any questions please contact me here at VetGen at either the phone number or e-mail listed below.
