AKC Canine Health Foundation
In 1995, the AKC Canine Health
Foundation was established by the American Kennel Club
to advance the health of dogs through the support of health
education and research. The mission of the AKC Canine Health
Foundation is to "develop significant resources for basic
and applied health programs with emphasis on canine genetics
to improve the quality of life for dogs and their owners"
In order to support Parent Clubs in their efforts to advance
the health of individual breeds the AKC-CHF initiated the Parent
Club Partnership Program in 1996. This program has three parts:
technical assistance for the identification of research proposals
and grants review and to provide the opportunity for Parent
Club restricted donation funds and matching funds.
The Golden Retriever Club of America established a Parent
Club Restricted Fund in 1996 as a result of a bequest in honor
of Carol A. Buckmann. The purpose of this fund is to support
canine health research programs that benefit Golden Retrievers.
Contributions to this fund, which are tax deductible, may be
made by anyone interested in the health of Golden Retrievers.
Recommendations regarding the use of these funds will be made
by the GRCA Board of Directors in cooperation with the Canine
Health Foundation as they continue to review the health of
the breed through surveys and other information resources.
